If you want to wake up looking over the water, you’re spoilt for choice in Newcastle. There are plenty of suburbs where you can watch the sun rise over the ocean, watch the ships in the harbour, the rowers on the river and the ducks on the creek.
Views over the ocean
Newcastle’s spot on the east coast is the envy of many. Watching the morning roll in over the waves while you have your first coffee of the day is a routine that never gets old.
Whether you do that from your balcony or stroll down to a cafe on the beach, there are plenty of properties that provide this dream.
If this is what you’re after, look for properties in Bar Beach, Merewether or Newcastle East. Be warned, though, that these properties are in high demand, making these some of the most expensive suburbs in Newcastle.
Views over Newcastle harbour
Whether you’ve got an interest in watching container ships, cruise ships or any other watercraft (or you just want views out to Nobbys Lighthouse), there are two amazing suburbs to choose from.
On the north of the harbour, you’ve got Stockton. Although a part of Newcastle LGA, Stockton is a suburb that stands alone in many ways. You’ll find a huge community feel here, as well as access to incredible beaches and one of the city’s best bakeries.
To the south of the harbour, a short ferry ride from Stockton, is Newcastle itself. Although you’ve got a few of the older properties looking out over the Foreshore, the best way to get a waterfront view is in one of the many units along Honeysuckle. The modern properties here sit above some of the best cafes and bars in Newy, plus you’re right on a walking track that goes to the beaches in one direction and Carrington and Wickham in the other.
Views over Coquun (Hunter River)
Follow the harbour further inland and you’ll come to the Hunter River, originally known as Coquun. Many of the suburbs along here are industrial (like Kooragang, which had a population of 4 [four] in the last census) but some spots like Warabrook and the Mayfield suburbs have access to the water.
Further up the river to Hexham is where you’ll find the best waterfront properties before you start getting into Port Stephens territory.
Views over Throsby Creek
A smaller tributary of the Hunter, Throsby Creek winds through many of Newcastle’s inner west suburbs. The creek begins technically begins in Mayfield, but it’s only once it merges with Styx Creek that it has the views that people clamour for.
From Islington, it flows past Tighes Hill, Maryville, Carrington and Wickham. These suburbs are all popular at the moment – think cosy, old homes, community spirit and some of the best cafes around. Each side of the creek has walking tracks along the water, as well as features like mangroves and parks to enjoy.
