Newcastle airport: where is it, international flights and more

If you’re thinking about moving to Newcastle, one of the big questions you might have are about its airport. Where is it, does it have international flights and what lounges and facilities are in the airport? We’ll answer all those and more.

1. Does Newcastle have an airport?

Yes! Opened in 1947, Newcastle’s airport is in Williamtown, roughly half an hour’s drive from the CBD. Its IATA code is NTL.

2. Where can you fly domestically to from Newcastle Airport?

If you move to Newy, you’ve got plenty of options for holidays within Australia with 11 direct options available (as of March 2026).

These include seven capital cities (Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney) and four other Aussie destinations (Cairns, Gold Coast, Lord Howe Island and Narrabri).

3. Where can you fly domestically to from Newcastle Airport?

At the moment, there’s only one international destination available from Newcastle: Bali.

However, you can also buy a one-stop flight to Singapore which means you’re just a connecting flight away from Europe and much of Asia.

Where will they fly to in the future? Although nothing has been confirmed, there are rumours and hopes for direct flights to China, Fiji, New Zealand and Singapore soon.

4. Is there a Qantas lounge at Newcastle Airport?

No. At the moment, there are no Qantas lounges (or any other airport lounge like Plaza) in the terminal at Newcastle.

Instead, you’ll find a cafe, bar, restaurant and plenty of vending machines inside the terminal.

There are some web results (and AI summaries) saying there’s an Aspire Lounge in Newcastle Airport, but be aware that this is for the airport in the English Newcastle (code NCL rather than NTL in New South Wales).

5. Which suburbs are near Newcastle Airport?

Despite being called Newcastle Airport, technically the terminal and runways are in Port Stephens LGA. Williamtown itself, a suburb with a population of just shy of 1000. is home to the airport, but there are plenty of options in Newcastle and Port Stephens within easy driving distance if you’re going to use the airport regularly.

Some of these include Fern Bay, Heatherbrae and Hexham, but in reality anywhere in Newcastle is close to the airport. The advantage of living in a smaller town with a smaller airport is that things are closer and queues are smaller.

6. How do you get to Newcastle Airport?

The easiest way to get to Newcastle Airport is to drive. Ideally, to get a friend to drive you so you don’t have to pay the expensive parking fees.

There’s no train or tram link to the airport, but there are public buses available from the city. You can get the latest timetables here.
